Crystal Lake is the largest city in McHenry County with a population of approximately 41,000. It is named after a lake that was described by early settlers as having “waters clear as crystal”. In 2015, Crystal Lake was voted by WalletHub as the #10 best city in the U.S.
The town is home to historic landmarks such as the Dole Mansion, which serves as the perfect backdrop for the annual Lakeside Festival Fourth of July celebration. In the downtown area you will find fully occupied retail businesses, and the nationally recognized entertainment venue Raue Center for the Arts.
In recent years, Crystal Lake has experienced diverse growth, yet has maintained its reputation for outdoor spaces and recreation. The Crystal Lake Park District manages in excess of 40 parks for families to play and unwind, most notably Three Oaks Recreation Area featuring a swim beach, fishing, scuba lessons, and a sledding hill during the winter.
Crystal Lake has ten elementary schools as part of District 47, and three high schools included in District 155. It is also home to McHenry County College, and has a remote Columbia College of Missouri campus.
The town’s slogan “A Great Place to Live”, has become an adopted practice for town officials and residents alike, offering a welcoming and friendly environment to all.
